It's not quite as bold and friendly as TunnelBear's bright yellow and bear-festooned app, but it's close. Subtle animations and pops of color help guide users and break up the experience. Surfshark does lack a map, which is a little annoying, but its app is easy to understand and very approachable. Surfshark reminds me a bit of NordVPN with a stunningly designed app that leans heavily into the blue spectrum. It has since been fixed and the connection was not affected previously. This is normal, but a previous version of the app had a bug in this process that caused the prompt to appear every time. When you connect the first time, you have to grant Surfshark permission to make changes to your system. I've seen a few other macOS developers do the same, and it's a trend I like. While Surfshark's privacy policies are a bit of a chore to read, I really like that the company presents you with a clear, concise statement about privacy when you fire up the app. This particular machine sports 16GB of RAM, and a 3.6 GHz eight-core Intel i9 processor. I tested Surfshark on a 2019 Retina-5K 27-inch iMac running macOS Catalina (version 10.15). Surfshark's browser extensions have been audited by a third-party, but its practices and infrastructure have yet to be publicly audited. The company also only earns revenue from VPN subscriptions, meaning it does not monetize its users.

It also publishes transparency information on its warrant canary page. Surfshark says it does not log user IP addresses or browsing history, or even connection timestamps. The company operates under the legal authority of the British Virgin Islands, but has distributed offices around the world. I have had issues with some of the opaqueness of Surfshark's privacy policies, but the company says this will be addressed.

Read my full review of Surfshark for an exhaustive look at the company's privacy practices. It's not a deal-breaker by any stretch, and most consumers won't notice, but it's a bit confusing. This protocol is secure and modern, but I prefer OpenVPN. I am frustrated that Surfshark only offers the IKEv2 VPN protocol for macOS. In Surfshark, the multihop connections are clearly labeled so you can see where your connection enters and where it exits. Most people probably won't use this feature, but it's only offered by ProtonVPN and NordVPN. Notably, Surfshark offers multihop VPN, a feature that routes your connection through multiple VPN servers for additional security and anonymity. Surfshark makes use of virtual servers-which are servers configured to appear somewhere else besides where they are physically located-but the company is transparent about which servers are virtual. ExpressVPN leads the pack with servers in 94 countries. That means more options for location spoofing and a better chance of finding a nearby server while traveling. More significant are the 61 countries in which Surfshark offers servers. More servers does not necessarily indicate better service, but it does mean more options for finding a server that meets your needs. CyberGhost leads here, with over 5,600 servers.

Foremost among them is ProtonVPN, which is the only VPN to not place a data limit on its free subscribers.ĭespite its relatively short life, SurfsharkVPN offers a surprisingly robust 1,040 servers. Nothing is cheaper than free, and there are a few free VPNs worth your consideration. Instead, use a short-term subscription to test how a particular service will work for you, and then upgrade. I caution against jumping in with a long-term subscription. Private Internet Access VPN has the most affordable annual plan among services I reviewed for macOS, costing just $39.95 per year. An annual plan with Surfshark costs $71.88, which compares well with much of the competition. Nearly every VPN provides longer-term subscriptions at lower prices. Many VPNs offer more affordable pricing, such as Norton Secure Connection VPN, which costs just $7.99 per month. Surfshark costs $11.95 per month, and the current average cost of a top-rated VPN is $10.80.
